About Integrative Law
Integrative Law is the collective name for a worldwide movement of legal professionals (Integrative Lawyers) who are rethinking and exploring what the law is and what its function should be in society. They are designing new models and approaches which often arise from a different set of values. Examples include collaborative practice, restorative justice, Earth law, sharing law, relational contracts, therapeutic jurisprudence, and several others.
“Integrative law is like the soil, from which many new models of legal practice are emerging,” says J. Kim Wright, one of the central figures in the Integrative Law Movement. The values in this “soil” are different from the conventional legal values (safety, certainty, emotional detachment, etc.). Integrative Law values are more focused on caring, listening, compassion, dignity, inclusivity, being relational, happiness, wellbeing, and love.
From the integrative mindset, new ways of thinking and acting arise. New models have emerged and old ways of looking at law have faded into the background. In this program, we will hear from practitioners of various integrative approaches. From the US to South Africa to Brazil, they will share how they are applying the integrative law mindset in their unique and innovative ways.

Trauma & Dispute Resolution
Stand-Alone Session - June 11 1:00-3:00 PM
Trauma is pervasive in our culture and it is often inextricably woven together with conflict.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions, about 64% of U.S. adults reported that they had experienced at least one type of Adverse Childhood Event (trauma) before age 18, and nearly 1 in 6 (17.3%) reported they had experienced four or more.
In this session, we will learn about trauma – what is it, how to tell when someone is triggered – and we’ll learn several tools for addressing trauma in our own lives and with our clients.

Teaching Integrative Law
SESSION 1: JUNE 6, 11 A.M. TO 1 P.M. US EASTERN TIME
An introduction to Integrative Law
Learn more about the growing Integrative Law Movement. What is it? What does it include? How is it related to ADR? What is happening around the world?
SESSION 2: JUNE 7, 11 A.M. TO 1 P.M. US EASTERN TIME
Professional Identity, Values, and Purpose
As you will learn, personal values are key to integrative law. (Part of what we are integrating are our values!) In this segment, we will explore how we work with students to create a personal Touchstone. We’ll also introduce the Operating Manual for Me, a tool for working collaboratively. You’ll see examples of both documents. Your homework will be to create your own Touchstone and Operating Manual to share in the next class.
SESSION 3: JUNE 13, 11 A.M. TO 1 P.M. US EASTERN
Integrating Well-Being into your courses
In the first half of the session, we will share our homework. Then, we will transition into exploring how well-being is integrated into the Integrative Law Curriculum. You will see examples of student well-being projects and will engage in an inquiry into what well-being practices work for you and your life. Your homework will be to create your own Well-Being Plan. Additional homework will be to start to outline a syllabus of a course you would like to teach – or how these elements could be added to an existing course you are already teaching.
SESSION 4: JUNE 14, 11 A.M. TO 1 P.M. US EASTERN
In this session, we will share homework. Participants will engage in an inquiry about whether an overview course or a particular topic will be their best direction. With input from classmates, we’ll create strategic plans for next steps: Depending on your backgrounds and positions, will you integrate aspects of integrative law into your existing courses? Or will you create a syllabus for a new course? We’ll share existing syllabi and dream together then make a concrete plan with an accountability system to make it happen.
