Empowering parties with mental illness:

A Workshop for Mediators, Collaborative Practitioners, and Advocates

March 1, 2018

1:00 - 5:00 PM

This workshop will teach you how to develop accessible practices that empower parties with mental health needs by becoming sensitive to their experiences, developing impartial plans to effectively address challenging behaviors without profiling based on mental illness, and implementing universal design principles to make your process more appealing and less stressful.  The training is led by Dan Berstein, a mediator living with bipolar disorder and a nationally recognized expert in applying conflict resolution skills to contexts involving mental health, challenging behaviors, and disabilities.

1 in 5 people have a diagnosable mental health problem each year. Are you ready for these issues when they impact your cases? Do you know what to do when a party discloses a mental health diagnosis? Or when one party accuses another of having one? How about when you, the practitioner, suspect that a mental health issue is at play? Dan Berstein is a mediator living with bipolar disorder and an expert in helping conflict resolvers become sensitive, accessible, and impartial toward parties with mental health needs. Join us to learn what you need to know about mental health concerns in your concerns.  This workshop will provide an introduction to ways to be sensitive to people with mental health experiences, ready for challenging behaviors, and accessible to disabilities and other needs.  These skills are applicable to empower all parties, not just those with mental health needs.
